Economies grow at a rapid pace and consumerism continues to increase, we must face the fact that resources are finite. But how can we utilize future waste and treat it as a resource? At Swerea we are striving for increased recycling in all our areas of expertise.
Now, via the newly started Industrial Recycling programme, Swerea is investing to become Europe's leading R&D player in this field. The focus is on the segments of the value chain where waste and residual products arise and can subsequently be recovered and recycled. By combining knowledge spanning several industrial sectors, Swerea wishes to create innovative and holistic solutions.
Via applied research in recycling, Swerea aims to:
- provide industry with the tools it needs to meet future environmental requirements;
- increase Swedish industrial use of raw materials that can be used to economic and environmental advantage;
- strategically place Swedish industry in a leading position to manage drastically increased waste streams;
- secure and maximize Sweden and Europe's raw-materials self-sufficiency through increased upgrading of residual products.
Swerea has long had indepth expertise in this area. For example, via joint Nordic collaboration involving foundries, soil manufacturers and researchers, Swerea SWECAST has developed technology for cascade recirculation of residual products by composting. The outcome is that 20-80% of the virgin sand that is used in soil production can be replaced by foundry sand. In another initiative, Swerea MEFOS, SSAB and LKAB have together developed an injection method for recirculating flue dust and blast furnace sludge. This material can effectively replace coal and coke, use of which can thereby be reduced. The method has reached industrial application and has been successfully introduced at SSAB in Oxelösund.
