Automotive corrosion produces large costs for society, companies and private car owners. Swerea has extensive experience in this area and conducts research in order to explore and find new solutions to corrosion problems.
Swerea KIMAB started its first research project within corrosion and corrosion protection back in the 1970’s. Corrosion on vehicles is mainly caused by road salt used not only in the Nordic countries but also in large parts of Europe, North America, Russia and north-eastern Asia.
Automotive corrosion can partly be prevented by regular washing. But today’s demands on low vehicle weight, and thereby less fuel consumption, causes manufacturers to use more mixed materials which in turn increases risk of bimetal corrosion and brings about new challenges.
Participate in research and our network
As a member you are invited to a unique network within corrosion research. We have members from more than 25 international companies comprising of automotive manufacturers, materials suppliers and corrosion protection suppliers.
The member programme finances and manages several research projects every year. Prioritised areas are:
- Development of methods for accelerated corrosion testing
- Measuring corrosion and the environment on vehicles in operation.
- Corrosion and corrosion protection of multimaterial designs.
Every third year we arrange an international seminar on corrosion and corrosion protection within the automotive industry. The seminar attracts about 70 participants from all over the world.
Please contact us if you would like to become a member or if you have any questions.
