Reheating furnaces course

This introductory course presents the theory and concepts used in the design and operation of steel reheating furnaces and is directed to everyone who is interested in improving their knowledge in the operation of either existing reheating furnaces or new equipment. The course will take participants from basic concepts, including a comparison of fuels and a discussion of radiative heat transfer, to the equipment used in furnaces, including burner technology, measurement instrumentation and process control technology. This short course will also provide a brief introduction to environmental issues like NOx reduction and energy conservation technology.

The concepts presented can help steel reheating furnace operators to achieve higher and more efficient production in their furnaces, but it is not a maintenance course.

The course will end with a half-day seminar on new technology in steel reheating furnaces.

The course is given in English.

This course is directed to hot-rolling mill engineers, technicians and other personnel responsible for the operation of steelmill reheating furnaces.

12.45- 13.45 Measurement techniques – Temperature, flow, gas analysis, etc. 
13.45-14.45 Process control I – General concepts including burner control and automatic furnace control systems (FOCS) 
14.45-15.00 Coffee Break
15.00-16.15 Process control II – Modelling and simulations of steel reheating – SteelTemp and SteelGen (with demonstration)
16.15-17.00 Tour of the Swerea MEFOS heating and metalworking pilot plant equipment
