Demand for sustainable, chemical-free textiles with low production costs is increasing; therefore, there is a need for new ways of thinking about textile fibres and textile raw materials. Swerea conducts textiles research and development and applies more than 400 analysis and test methods in northern Europe's most well-equipped textile laboratories.
In collaboration with industry we can influence the entire chain; from raw material to feedstock, to yarn and textiles, but also from recovered textiles to new textiles. With methods such as solution spinning, melt spinning and electro-spinning, we can provide support when you develop new textile products from biobased raw materials such as cellulose feedstock from forest raw materials.
We collaborate with some of the world largest resellers to develop new textile materials. CelluTex and EcoBuild are just two of the initiatives we coordinate to promote research, development and innovation within this area.
Functional and technical textiles
We have expertise in the area of functional fibres, with focus on temperature-regulating fibres that can be electrically conductive, piezoelectric fibres and electrospun nanofibres for biomedical applications. We have also amassed considerable knowledge concerning technical textiles. These are often referred to as smart textiles, examples of which include garments with sensors that can measure the pulse of patients in healthcare.
How can we help you?
With indepth knowledge of textile chemistry, we can provide analysis, assessment and advice on the development of existing or new textile products. Naturally, we are accredited. We help you to quality assure textile products with respect to materials selection, manufacturing processes, comfort and analysis of hazardous chemical substances. We also provide Oeko-Tex® certification for labelling of textiles, including leather and accessories.
