Marine

Structures used in marine environments are exposed to mechanical stress and corrosive saline water. This applies both to structures under and above the water surface. Swerea collaborates closely with materials manufacturers and suppliers to the marine industry.

Swerea conducts extensive research and development activities in this field, mainly concerning stainless steels, nickel alloys and titanium. We work with the following areas:

  • Assessment of corrosion resistance in stainless steels, nickel and titanium alloys in seawater:
    - Electrochemical measurements
    - Stress corrosion cracking
    - Corrosion  fatigue
    - Field testing in seawater
  • Calculation of cathodic protection
  • Assessment of various types of corrosion protection
