Corrosion and surfacing technology
Swerea conducts R&D and assignments in the field of corrosion, providing help and data to the private and public sectors so that optimal material selections can be made and measures taken to prevent corrosion. Our corrosion operations embrace both corrosion of metallic materials and polymers.
We cover the entire breadth of the field, including atmospheric corrosion, corrosion in fluids as well as corrosion in soil and concrete. We also focus on solving problems that are unique to the various industries. A problem in the automotive industry for example, might be shared by multiple automakers.
Methods for corrosion protection
Corrosion can be combated in many different ways and the most appropriate method can vary from case to case, depending on the environment, application, service life requirements, etc. Recommendations can widely vary, from applying different types of corrosive protection to modifying environmental conditions or designs.
In the field of surfacing technology we study how well metal surfaces fulfil set requirements and how they perform in the relevant environments. We work both with untreated and treated surfaces that must comply with requirements for resistance to wear and corrosion, or that require other functional surface properties.
We perform analyses of surface cleanliness, surface coatings, adhesion, mechanical properties, etc. For painted surfaces we investigate gloss, smoothness colour deviation.
In tribology (the study of wear, friction and lubrication) we have expertise in fretting, tribocorrosion, impact wear and friction properties for machine components.
