Materials development – Metallic materials
Our pilot facilities house equipment suitable for certain types of materials development. Such development includes blank production in vacuum induction furnace, heating in furnaces, rolling and forging in rolling mills and forging press as well as testing of grinding discs in our grinding machine. We are able to perform tests on a small scale and on small quantities. Our test operations are characterised by a high level of confidentiality, process-versed personnel, high flexibility and use advanced measurement techniques for process parameters.

Project “Swerea Rent stål” (Swerea Pure Steel) is a Swerea-wide undertaking for the development of knowledge on production processes for pure steel and foundry products. Steel manufacturers normally define pure steel based on the quantity, shape and size distribution of the slag inclusions. In pure steel, the slag inclusions do not have a negative impact on production or on use of the product. Thus, there are many gains to be made here. Interest within industry is huge, particularly among manufacturers of tool steel and ball bearing steel.
Development is gained through four group-wide subprojects:
1. Refinement of metal raw material for the foundry industry
2. Traceability of slag inclusions
3. The effect of metalworking on slag inclusions
4. Minimised oxygen content in powder-metallurgical products.
The project is headed by Swerea MEFOS, with Swerea IVF, Swerea KIMAB and Swerea SWECAST as important partners.
