Process integration

Swerea MEFOS has massive collective expertise in process integration and process integration within the steel industry is an area of growth on an international scale.
PRISMA – Centre for Process Integration in Steelmaking – is an Institute Excellence Centre established at Swerea MEFOS in 2006. The research program PRISMA applies process integration within ore refinement as well as iron and steel production. The first three-year phase was completed in 2009. The steel industry and public financiers were unanimous in the decision to finance another three-year phase ending in 2012. Interest is great and the number of industrial partners has increased from three to seven since the program first started. PRISMA has a strong focus on total solutions to increase energy and material efficiency throughout the manufacturing system from mine to finished product.
Why process integration?
- An improvement in one subprocess does not always lead to an improvement for the system as a whole.
- As the complexity of a system increases, there is also a greater likelihood of finding new solutions with a systematic method.
- It is possible to compare solutions to achieve different goals and to choose between conflicting goals.
- Seek out answers to strategic questions, new processes, adaptations, investments, etc.
