We refine and reconstruct over and over again…

Swerea MEFOS performs large-scale research and development in its own facilities on behalf of companies and institutions. The assignments are in the fields of metallurgy, process engineering and environmental improvement, and are strictly confidential when so requested by the principal.
The assignments cover many different kinds of metals and oxides and have such purposes as:
- the recovery of metal or other valuable substances from low-grade or complex raw materials such as residual products or low-grade ores
- process development for more effective, more environmentally friendly and more energy-saving processes, resulting in better products with less environmental impact and smarter resource utilisation
Swerea MEFOS’s large-scale research and development is based on our researchers’ and project managers’ excellent technical knowledge and scientific expertise, on our operations technicians’ broad experience of controlling equipment and processes, and the flexible equipment and its infrastructure – premises, media, safety, environment, chemical analyses, logistics etc.
The capacity of the large-scale experimental equipment for metallurgical processes is between three and six tonnes, for processing mills and forging presses up to 500 tonnes, heat treatment furnaces 3 tonnes/hour, and includes:
- metallurgical equipment for most known processes within reduction, smelting and casting
- process engineering equipment for smelting, heating, sheet, band and rod rolling, forging, grinding and straightening
- environmental equipment for dust and gas cleaning
