Heat treatment is almost always included as a step in the production of cast components of iron and steel. It offers many opportunities for ”tailoring” the properties of components. Many aluminium alloys cast in sand and chill moulds are also heat treated in order to change their properties.
High temperatures and long treatment times result in high energy costs and require large furnace capacity. Optimizing the various steps of the process is essential for maintaining the competitive strength of casting materials.
