Process and alloy development

Swerea KIMAB has outstanding skills and technology within advanced metallography, thermodynamics and process optimisation, supporting the development of new, more sophisticated materials and processes. For industry this means effective support for increased competitiveness and profitability.

We study the final properties of the material within a number of projects. We study the way in which alloy composition and microstructure influences the material’s end properties, in order to be able to understand how different microstructures arise and how these influence strength, viscosity and plasticity. We study the way in which the microstructure arises through the manufacturing process. Complex production processes such as casting, hot processing, cold processing and heat treatments are simulated in laboratory scale, to feed results back to industry as a basis for adapting processes. An essential part of the operation is run on-line in production.
