Creep crack growth

Components used in power plants, petrochemical and aircraft industries subjected to creep at elevated temperatures always contain defects, microscopically or macroscopically. The defects, e.g. cracks, may have already existed after manufacturing, or they may initiate and develop during service. Uncontrolled crack growth will eventually cause leakage and failure.

Questions arise; how fast does a crack grow? how large crack can be tolerated? for how long can a defect component be safely used?

Experience

As a Swedish leading group, CCG testing methodology has been developed during the last decades. Research activities include CCG tests on copper alloys, low and high alloy steels, stainless steels, superalloys and their weldments.
