Material characterisation & material selection

Swerea KIMAB conducts analyses to assure the quality of materials and products. We conduct tests of mechanical properties and analyses of chemical composition to ensure that they agree with a particular certificate or standard. To ensure that a material is correctly produced, heat treated or surface treated, we analyse the microstructure. Quite often our statements can be decisive in a dispute when one suspects that the delivered material or product does not comply with the set requirements. That we are an impartial party and treat all assignments with confidentiality is a prerequisite for our customers.

Many of our customers also engage us in the selection of materials or suppliers. We can state the requirements that should be placed on the material in the given application and suggest materials that fulfil these requirements. It can for example, concern strength, resistance to corrosion, resistance to wear and heat conductivity. Factors such as price and service life are also usually considered. In this way our customers obtain good supporting data when choosing a supplier, and they can discuss advantages and disadvantages of various materials in the given application.
