Corrosion in Pulp & Paper Industry

Research of Corrosion in Pulp & Paper Industry has a long tradition at KIMAB. Materials are under a great stress in most of the applications in the Pulp&Paper industry as e.g. digesters, bleachers, paper machines, evaporators and tanks. The cost for corrosion has been estimated to 3 % of the market price of the pulp, taken to account the cost for exchange and repair of equipment. Recovery demands and energy savings have lead to new challenges concerning materials in this area during the last years.

Activities within the MRC

  • Studies in laboratory environment
  • Exposures at industrial plant
  • Theoretical studies
  • Failure investigations

Activities cover corrosion of Metallic and Polymeric Materials in:

  • Digesters
  • Bleaching
  • Evaporators
  • Tanks

Experimental facilities

  • Autoclaves for testing at elevated temperature and pressure
  • Electrochemical test methods
  • A broad range of metallographic and microscopically evaluation methods
