Machine Safety, CE Marking and Product Liability

To be able to sell products in EEA markets (EU + EFTA) manufacturers/suppliers need to ensure that they produce/deliver machines and safeguarding in accordance with the safety requirements in the EU Machinery Directive, EMC Directive and the Low Voltage Directive.

CE marking work comprises designing and manufacturing machines according to the requirements in the Machinery Directive. For users of the machines, it is important to know how the rules apply at the time of purchase in order to be able to negotiate safety solutions adapted to production engineering. Production-adapted  safety is therefore a key term for achieving safety that works on the factory floor.

Product development has become a major liability issue though the adoption of product responsibility legislation in all European countries. A "defect" in a product may result in substantial damage payments. This reorganisation has created great demand for information on how to comply with safety requirements, and we have developed methods that will systematise companies' work on risk assessment  as well as certifying machines.

Swerea IVF actively participates in international standardisation work on machine safety and the interest from Swedish companies for information is very high.

We will assist you with various elements of the process for CE marking machinery, such as:

• Risk assessment
• Support during the selection of safety measures
• Support during the establishment of procedures for CE marking
• Support for technical documentation
• Training. Swerea IVF offers courses (in Swedish) in the area of machine safety in collaboration with SIS Swedish Standards Institute. These take place in Mölndal and Stockholm, see www.sis.se , click button “Utbildningar”.
